Estimate your own cost

Neither rate has a default here — SMS and WhatsApp pricing both vary by provider, country and volume. Since 1 July 2025 Meta bills WhatsApp per delivered template message (marketing, utility or authentication), not per conversation; a service reply, or a utility template inside an open 24-hour customer-service window, is free and not part of this estimate. See Meta's WhatsApp Business Platform pricing (last checked 29 Sep 2026) and your own SMS provider's quote, then enter what they charge you below.

How to use it

How to compare SMS and WhatsApp for your business

  1. Read the comparison table: reach, cost model, media support, opt-in rules, delivery reports, and the PTA/Meta constraints each channel works under.

  2. Enter your own SMS rate per segment and your WhatsApp rate per template category (marketing, utility or authentication) — this tool has no built-in prices, because both change by provider, country and volume.

  3. Enter your expected monthly volume for each channel to see an estimated total cost side by side.

Neither channel is automatically "better" — SMS reaches every phone number with no app needed, while WhatsApp can carry richer media and, for a business that mostly replies to customers, often costs less because those service replies are free.

Where to get SMS and WhatsApp sending set up

Whichever mix you land on, you will need a route to actually send: a bulk SMS provider for the SMS side, and either Meta directly or a Business Solution Provider for WhatsApp. Options include going direct to each, or a single dashboard such as WaSMS (run by the same team as this site), which sends SMS and WhatsApp from one place. Check each against the volume and rates you entered above.

Frequently asked questions

Which channel is actually cheaper, SMS or WhatsApp?

It depends on your volume and message type. SMS is billed per 160-character segment regardless of content. WhatsApp Business API is billed per delivered template message — marketing, utility or authentication — since Meta moved to per-message pricing on 1 July 2025; a service reply, or a utility template sent inside an open 24-hour customer-service window, is free. For businesses that mostly reply to customers, WhatsApp often wins; for one-off outbound alerts or OTPs, SMS can be cheaper. Enter your own rates in the calculator below to compare.

Does everyone who gets my SMS also get my WhatsApp message?

No. SMS reaches any phone that can receive text messages, smartphone or not, with no app or internet required. WhatsApp only reaches people who have WhatsApp installed and have opted in to receive your messages, which excludes some phones entirely and requires an active internet connection at the moment you send.

What are PTA and Meta's rules for messaging customers in Pakistan?

For SMS, Pakistan's PTA requires businesses to register branded sender IDs and follow anti-spam rules for bulk sending. For WhatsApp, a business-initiated message needs both an opted-in customer and a Meta-approved template, unless it falls inside an open 24-hour customer-service window that the customer started — opt-in alone does not skip the template requirement. Meta also enforces its own account quality and opt-out rules. Both channels expect genuine consent, not a purchased number list.

Can I use both SMS and WhatsApp together?

Yes, and many businesses do: WhatsApp for engaged customers with the app and connectivity, SMS as the fallback that reaches everyone else, including feature phones and areas with weak data coverage. A common pattern is trying WhatsApp first for cost and richer media, then SMS for delivery confirmations, OTPs or anyone who does not respond.
